PHILADELPHIA – A Philadelphia firefighter was found dead inside a Holmesburg home early Wednesday morning, sparking an active investigation by local authorities. Police and emergency responders were called to the 4700 block of Shelmire Avenue just before 4 a.m. following reports of an incident inside the residence.

When officers arrived, they discovered a 27-year-old man locked on the front porch of the home. According to police, the man told officers about an incident that had taken place inside the property.

“We were informed that something serious happened inside the home,” a Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson said. “Upon entering, officers discovered a 56-year-old man who was extremely injured.”

The victim, later confirmed to be a firefighter, was transported immediately to a nearby hospital. Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

“I am concerned that if they pass this, people are just going to go left and right cutting down trees,” she said. “Neighborhoods could lose a lot of greenery very quickly.”

Dugan, a former Municipal Court judge, held a news conference outside City Hall on Tuesday to announce the endorsement. Framing himself as a “unity candidate,” he emphasized that the race is about more than partisan politics.

“This race is bigger than the left, the right, the red, the blue,” Dugan said. The statement highlights his campaign’s effort to appeal to voters across the political spectrum, a strategy that could prove critical in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than six-to-one.

Dugan, a registered Democrat, initially lost to Krasner in the spring primary. However, he successfully launched a write-in campaign organized by Philadelphia’s Republican Party, securing the GOP nomination. “I’m focused on the job, not political labels,” Dugan told reporters, reinforcing the centrist messaging of his campaign.

Andrew Yang, the Forward Party founder and former Democratic candidate for president and New York City mayor, did not attend the announcement. Robert Grabel, representing the Forward Party’s Pennsylvania chapter, explained the party’s decision to endorse Dugan.

He added that the Forward Party plans to support Dugan “in a number of ways,” including voter outreach, volunteer coordination, and connecting him with donors, although no specific financial contributions were detailed.

Former Philadelphia City Councilmember David Oh also attended the news conference, signaling broader local support for Dugan’s bid. With three weeks remaining until Election Day on Nov. 4, the endorsement could provide a jolt to what has so far been a quiet general election campaign.

Campaign activity in the race has been notably low. Both candidates have held few public events, and there has been minimal advertising. Dugan’s fundraising has also lagged since switching to the Republican ticket, with campaign finance reports showing he has raised just $26,000. By contrast, during the spring Democratic primary, Dugan out-raised Krasner significantly, with much of that funding coming from labor unions.

“Philadelphia voters are looking for someone who can unite the city and focus on results,” Dugan said. “I believe this endorsement helps reinforce that message.”

Krasner, a progressive Democrat, defeated Dugan in the May primary by 28 percentage points, and Republican candidates have historically faced steep challenges in citywide races. Yet Dugan’s centrist positioning and the Forward Party endorsement could give his campaign new momentum in a race that remains far from predictable.

Darius de Haas has long been celebrated as a “vocal acrobat,” known for his extraordinary range and versatility. From Broadway stages to concert halls worldwide, he has built a career that spans multiple musical genres.

“I’m looking forward to appearing at the Rittenhouse Grill, which is a sort of swanky throwback to the 1940s cabaret atmosphere,” de Haas says. “The focus is a much more intimate setting where I can get up close to my audience.”

During this special performance, de Haas plans to feature songs by some of the great vocalists who have inspired him over the years. “Artists like Nat ‘King’ Cole, Johnny Mathis, and Sam Cooke have shaped my musical journey,” he explains. “This type of atmosphere allows me to really connect with my audience.”

Born in Chicago, de Haas grew up surrounded by music. His father, jazz bassist Eddie de Haas, mother Geraldine Bey de Haas, aunt Salome Bey, and uncle Andy Bey all contributed to a rich musical environment.

“I was surrounded by music all my life, so I guess you could say it was only natural that it would become a part of me,” de Haas shares. “And I’m so glad it did because today I can honestly say I love what I do.”

From a young age, de Haas knew he wanted to sing and perform on Broadway. “I would see my mother in different shows and then try to reproduce what I heard,” he recalls. “I always knew I wanted to be on Broadway. Taking everything into account, I would say I was blessed with a gift that turned into a lifelong passion.”

To pursue his dreams, de Haas immersed himself in theater, acting, choir, and dance classes while in high school. Afterward, he attended Columbia College in Chicago and later earned a scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

De Haas made his Broadway debut in the original production of Kiss of the Spider Woman and went on to star in productions including Rent, The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, and Marie Christine. His career spans television, touring with legendary artists such as Elvis Costello, Deborah Harry, and Roberta Flack, and performing at renowned venues like Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, The Kennedy Center, The National Symphony, and the Boston Pops.

Beyond his performing career, de Haas is deeply committed to social causes. He has worked with The Fair Housing Justice Center and Covenant House and is a founding member of Black Theatre United, an organization supporting Black excellence and combating systemic racism in the entertainment industry.

When he’s not performing or advocating for change, de Haas continues to record music. His latest album, Let Me Carry You, showcases his talent and dedication to his craft.

“I think among my other ‘gifts’ is my patience,” he concludes. “I would urge others seeking to get into this business to adopt the same emotion. Take it slowly — one day at a time — and continue to grow.”

Los Angeles Trash Collection Fees Soar for First Time in 17 Years

Los Angeles residents could soon see a significant increase in their trash collection bills. The City Council is scheduled to give final approval Tuesday to an ordinance raising trash collection fees, marking the first rate adjustment in 17 years. The new fees, expected to take effect next month, aim to cover rising costs for waste management services, officials said.

Last week, the council voted 12-2 in favor of the ordinance. Council members Adrin Nazarian and Monica Rodriguez opposed the increase, citing concerns about the impact on residents, while Councilman Curren Price was absent. The ordinance still requires a second council vote Tuesday before being sent to Mayor Karen Bass for final consideration. Once signed, the rate changes will take effect after 30 days.

City officials highlighted that the new fees would affect the city’s Solid Resources Program, which manages residential trash collection and related waste services. Under the proposed changes, single-family homes and duplexes will see a 54% increase, rising from $36.32 to $55.95 per month. Apartments with three to four units will face a 130% increase, jumping from $24.33 to $55.95 per month.

“This is a big jump for many families,” said a community housing advocate. “While the increase may be necessary for city operations, it will significantly impact household budgets.”

Bi-monthly bills from the Department of Water and Power could rise to $111.90 once the fee adjustments are in place. However, low-income residents who qualify for the city’s EZ-SAVE or Lifeline programs will still be eligible for reduced rates, city officials said.

The ordinance also outlines gradual increases over the next four fiscal years. By the 2029-30 fiscal year, rates for single-family homes, duplexes, and small apartment buildings could reach $65.93 per month, representing an additional 18% increase. Approximately 743,000 households, along with 474,000 residences that receive bulky item collection services, will be affected by the changes. Apartment buildings with five or more units currently pay the full fee.

City Council members emphasized that the increase is part of long-term planning to maintain high-quality sanitation services. “We understand the impact on residents,” said a council spokesperson. “But these adjustments are necessary to sustain essential waste management operations across the city.”
