Darius de Haas has long been celebrated as a “vocal acrobat,” known for his extraordinary range and versatility. From Broadway stages to concert halls worldwide, he has built a career that spans multiple musical genres.

“I’m looking forward to appearing at the Rittenhouse Grill, which is a sort of swanky throwback to the 1940s cabaret atmosphere,” de Haas says. “The focus is a much more intimate setting where I can get up close to my audience.”

During this special performance, de Haas plans to feature songs by some of the great vocalists who have inspired him over the years. “Artists like Nat ‘King’ Cole, Johnny Mathis, and Sam Cooke have shaped my musical journey,” he explains. “This type of atmosphere allows me to really connect with my audience.”

Born in Chicago, de Haas grew up surrounded by music. His father, jazz bassist Eddie de Haas, mother Geraldine Bey de Haas, aunt Salome Bey, and uncle Andy Bey all contributed to a rich musical environment.

“I was surrounded by music all my life, so I guess you could say it was only natural that it would become a part of me,” de Haas shares. “And I’m so glad it did because today I can honestly say I love what I do.”

From a young age, de Haas knew he wanted to sing and perform on Broadway. “I would see my mother in different shows and then try to reproduce what I heard,” he recalls. “I always knew I wanted to be on Broadway. Taking everything into account, I would say I was blessed with a gift that turned into a lifelong passion.”

To pursue his dreams, de Haas immersed himself in theater, acting, choir, and dance classes while in high school. Afterward, he attended Columbia College in Chicago and later earned a scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

De Haas made his Broadway debut in the original production of Kiss of the Spider Woman and went on to star in productions including Rent, The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, and Marie Christine. His career spans television, touring with legendary artists such as Elvis Costello, Deborah Harry, and Roberta Flack, and performing at renowned venues like Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, The Kennedy Center, The National Symphony, and the Boston Pops.

Beyond his performing career, de Haas is deeply committed to social causes. He has worked with The Fair Housing Justice Center and Covenant House and is a founding member of Black Theatre United, an organization supporting Black excellence and combating systemic racism in the entertainment industry.

When he’s not performing or advocating for change, de Haas continues to record music. His latest album, Let Me Carry You, showcases his talent and dedication to his craft.

“I think among my other ‘gifts’ is my patience,” he concludes. “I would urge others seeking to get into this business to adopt the same emotion. Take it slowly — one day at a time — and continue to grow.”

Philadelphia Hispanic Heritage Month Shines with ‘Indivisible’ Campaign

Philadelphia is taking a bold step this Hispanic Heritage Month with the launch of Indivisible, a campaign that shines a spotlight on the stories of six Hispanic Philadelphians making a mark in their communities. The campaign, created by The Perception, highlights how being Hispanic and calling America home can exist as one indivisible whole.

“Philadelphia has always been a city that welcomes everyone,” said a spokesperson from Visit Philadelphia. “With Indivisible, we wanted to show the fullness of Hispanic American identity and celebrate the people who embody it every day.”

Story Highlights:

  • The Indivisible campaign features six Philadelphia leaders from food, arts, education, and business.

  • It emphasizes belonging, identity, and the city’s commitment to inclusivity.

The campaign’s concept grew from a fascinating discovery: when translating the Pledge of Allegiance into Spanish, one word remains the same—“indivisible.” This word became a bridge, capturing the essence of what it means to be proudly Hispanic and proudly American.

Indivisible is about more than just words,” said campaign director Jon Walley. “It’s about the lives of real people in Philadelphia who live out this idea every day.”

This campaign arrives at a moment when discussions around identity and belonging are happening across the country. Philadelphia is using this opportunity to reaffirm that everyone who calls the city home—whether by birth or choice—is part of the city’s fabric.

The six changemakers featured in Indivisible are:

  • Cristina Martinez, James Beard Award-winning chef at South Philly Barbacoa.

  • Keila Perez-Vega, world champion salsa dancer and founder of Artsi Philly.

  • Brandon Cisneros, digital and marketing specialist at Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

  • Edward Garcia, owner of Queen & Rook Game Cafe.

  • Shawnick Rodriguez, artist and educator affiliated with Taller Puertorriqueño.

  • Stephanie Ramones, filmmaker and videographer.

Each of their stories is a testament to Philadelphia’s vision of being the nation’s most welcoming destination.

The campaign is part of Visit Philadelphia’s In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union initiative, which demonstrates how destination marketing can inspire conversations and drive visitation.

The Indivisible campaign includes a video series available at visitphilly.com/indivisible, with new videos rolling out through October 15, 2025. Print advertisements appear in bilingual regional publications, while a YouTube programmatic media buy targets Spanish-language content. Social media content is also active across Facebook and Instagram to reach broader audiences.

“Philadelphia is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with such inspiring stories,” said Visit Philadelphia’s communications director. “It’s a reminder that our city is built on diversity, creativity, and community.”

Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy Haunts Philadelphia with Live Cocktail Experience

Philadelphia is preparing for a hauntingly unique experience this October as the Edgar Allan Poe speakeasy sets up at The Fallser Club in East Falls from October 9 to 11. Catering exclusively to adults 21 and older, the three-day event promises a four-part cocktail journey that merges expertly crafted drinks with live entertainment inspired by the timeless works of Edgar Allan Poe.

The 2025 installment, dubbed “Chapter 2,” follows the speakeasy’s first appearance in Philadelphia in 2023. Organizers emphasize that this year’s experience will be more immersive, celebrating Poe’s literary genius in the very city that fueled much of his imagination.

“Over a century and a half after Edgar Allan Poe’s death, this cocktail experience brings his most beloved works to life off the page and onto the stage,” said show creator Julia Tirinnanzi.

She added, “We love Poe’s works and wanted to celebrate it. Philadelphia inspired some of Poe’s most famous stories, so bringing this new chapter to the city felt essential.”

Northern Liberties, home to the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site and the renowned Poe Mural at North 7th and Spring Garden streets, was chosen for its deep historical connection to the writer. Poe lived in Philadelphia between 1838 and 1844, including the last year to 18 months on North 7th Street, near Craft Hall. During his time in the city, he produced some of his most famous and enduring works, including The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, William Wilson, and The Oval Portrait. Many literary historians consider Philadelphia a crucible for Poe’s imagination.

The speakeasy this year will bring four of Poe’s stories to life on stage: The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, and Annabel Lee. Each story will be paired with a themed cocktail, carefully crafted to enhance the atmosphere and storytelling. Drinks include a hibiscus bourbon lemonade called “Lover’s Lament,” a prosecco float twist named “Swing of Fate,” an orange and amontillado tipper dubbed “Montresor’s Revenge,” and a pomegranate and cold brew creation called “Roderick’s Ruin.”

Tickets are priced at $55 and cover all four drinks, venue admission, and the full live experience. Cocktail or Poe-inspired attire is suggested but not required, and alcohol-free alternatives are available upon request.

“We want each experience to be unique and special,” Tirinnanzi said. “Everyone should feel like they are part of the performance.”

With its blend of immersive storytelling, literary homage, and expertly mixed cocktails, the Edgar Allan Poe speakeasy offers Philadelphia residents and visitors a rare chance to step inside the macabre mind of one of America’s greatest writers.
