Two passengers on a historic World War II aircraft perished on Saturday, according to fire department officials, when the aircraft crashed not long after it took off from Chino Airport in Southern California.

The private Lockheed L-12 aircraft was in a grassy field approximately 200 yards from the runway when fire department personnel arrived at 12:35 PM, according to Chino Valley Fire District Battalion Chief Brian Turner, who spoke to a major news outlet.

The passengers’ identities were not immediately made public.

Turner stated that although the plane was on fire, it is too soon to say why it crashed.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration both declared they would look into the collision.
